LEED is the acronym for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.

In terms of evaluating and scoring a building’s energy efficiency and environmental or green friendliness, LEED is the most popular scoring system in the world.

The scoring assesses the building based on its site development, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, material and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation.

Based on its score, a building can receive one of four LEED certifications:

  • Certified: 40-49 points
  • Silver: 50-59 points
  • Gold: 60-79 points
  • Platinum: 80+ points

According to the US Green Building Council (USGBC), 2.2 million square feet of building and infrastructure space achieve LEED certification every day.
